‘The Winning Doc’
Beauty queen-turned-physician uses radio show to help women

BY NATASHA CHILINGERIAN (AMERICAN PRESS JUNE 20, 2007)

Dr. Vidushi Babber is taking a model approach to psychiatry.

The 33-year-old India native is a former beauty pageant queen, an accomplished speaker, author and physician who practices in Lake Charles.

She’s adding radio talk show host to her list of job titles. On June 6, she debuted “Winning With Wellness: Where Beauty Meets Health” on the Women’s Channel of the Internet radio network VoiceAmerica.

The show runs the gamut of issues affecting women, and besides providing information about common mental health related problems — eating disorders, stress, post-partum depression and domestic violence — Dr. Babber wants to help women look beautiful, too.

“I was thinking about creating a wellness program, and with Internet radio I can reach anyone in the world,” she said. “I want to move toward prevention and education. I added beauty to the show because women think about looking good and feeling good.”

While her show targets women ages 25 to 50, Dr. Babber has a special interest in improving the mental health of beauty pageant contestants. She entered the pageant scene at age 19 in order to improve her public speaking skills and learn how to think on her feet, and she currently holds the title of Ms. Houston 2007.

She hopes to prevent today’s looks-obsessed pageant contestants from developing eating disorders.

“Women in the pageant industry need (education) the most because they’re spokespeople for the world,” she said. “The younger ones need to be encouraged that it’s about who you are as a person, not just about how you look.”

Dr. Babber feels her out-of the-box approach will help make a difference in women. She often goes under the moniker of “Winning Doc,” and on her Web site she posted a photo of herself dressed in a gown, tiara and sash that reads “The Winning Doc.” In the photo, she holds a trophy and wears a stethoscope around her neck.

By looking successful, strong and beautiful, she hopes to get her message across to the women who need it most.

“Girls need someone to look up to, and if I go out like that, they’ll listen,” Dr. Babber says. “I’m giving them the message that smart is beautiful. I’m doing this for a good cause, and sometime you have to blend out instead blend in to make a difference in life.”

The show airs Wednesdays at 9 a.m. CST through Aug. 29 for a 13-week pilot season, and each show will feature one “wellness guest” and one “super role model,” the latter of whom Dr. Babber describes as women who are promoting wellness in society. On June 13, she hosted Tina B. Tessina, a.k.a. “Dr. Romance,” and plans for other well-known guests are in the works. She also plans to use the show as a launch pad for female business owners to promote their products and as a venue for beauty advice.

“Women are under a lot of pressure,” she says. “They’re independent and pursuing their dreams, and they also want to have a husband, kids and a home. That can lead to anxiety and depression. I want to show them that life doesn’t have to be perfect.”

Stephan Jacob, the show’s executive producer, says he chose to work with Dr. Babber because she struck him as a unique, energetic and successful role model.

“She’s vivacious, serving and operates with integrity,” Jacob said. “She’s a practicing physician and still a young, powerful, accomplished woman. She’s marrying what appear to be opposed venues — pageantry and mental health — and she can shed some light on things that haven’t been shed light on.”

Dr. Babber says she hopes the show will continue running regularly so she can accomplish her mission of educating women outside of her patient pool.

“I feel like I’m not making the difference I want to make by diagnosing and treating patients,” Dr. Babber said. “This way, I can reach more people, and everyone’s hungry for education. I want to teach them to take care of themselves on the inside and on the outside, too.”
